Mario Mandate I | The 4 Games That Changed Mario
The "Mario Mandates" is the idea that licensed Super Mario games (Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Odyssey, New Super Mario Bros) , particularly spinoffs (Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi, Super Mario RPG, Mario Strikers, Mario Sluggers, Mario Tennis, etc) , must use established characters and designs from the existing Mario brand with little if any variation between them. This prevents developers from getting too 'liberal' in general with the Mario IP.
While this seems necessary for such a massive and widely known property, it went a lot deeper, causing controversy for Nintendo games from the late 2000's to now. Let's talk about it in the first part of the documentary covering 2005-2011.
