Mark Plays... Full Tilt! Pinball 2 - Is It An Improvement? (Windows 98)(PC)
#Pinball #Cinematronics #Windows98
Who doesn't know Space Cadet, the Pinball table that came with Windows XP. It turns out Space Cadet was part of a three table pinball game called "Full Tilt! Pinball" which was developed by Cinematronics and published by Maxis in 1995.
They made a sequel called "Full Tilt! Pinball 2" also featuring 3 tables. But have they improved on the first game? Let's find out.
I don't think the tables work as well as the ones in the first game, those resemble 'real' physical pinball tables more than the three tables in this game. Their design is different from physical tables, they're much wider, there's far less obstacles in the playing area and there's much less a sense of control. It feels that the game leaves more to chance than that you're able to become better at a table by playing them.
The table with the ball turning into a smiley with the player having to knock down a set of cards that are stood up in a triangle formation of all tables feels more like a real pinball table where technique and dexterity can be used to play than the other tables.
Graphically they look very nice, the graphics are bold. The gaming area is more zoomed in and displayed at more of a sloped angle, this results in a better view of the ball that is actually a little reflective. The ball and the game can move quite a bit faster than the previous game and it seems to be more responsive than the first release. The code used by the game seems more optimized; the 2nd game is more fluid and responsive on the same hardware than the original Full Tilt! Pinball game.
Despite all that and that in Full Tilt! the graphics are more dithered and also catering for 256colour displays with possibly, probably not using DirectX D3D persé but WinG (you can play and use the first release on Windows 3.x!!!!) or DirectDraw - the original game has tables that feel more like pinball tables than the tables in this game. Comparing the two; hoping for a better experience with similar realistically shaped tables will result in a bit of a let down. But taken on it's own - this game is more responsive with audio less laggy and better use of the colour palette - so it does play better despite not having better tables or tables of the same quality.
What would have been great is if they had included the 3 tables of the first game as am upgraded bonus, extra feature in this game. Those original three tables would have looked and played great with the technical improvements in this game.
So a bit of a mixed bag this one.
