Max Payne 2: Summary
Two years after the first game, Max Payne is now an NYPD detective investigating a series of murders by the contract killers called the Cleaners. He encounters Mona Sax, presumed dead, who is arrested for the murder of Senator Gate. The police station is attacked by the Cleaners, who are after Mona, but she escapes. Max and Mona team up to find those responsible, confronting the Cleaners at a construction site. During the confrontation, Detective Valerie Winterson arrives and, suspecting Mona, holds her at gunpoint. Mona claims Winterson intends to kill her; Max, trusting Mona, shoots Winterson, who then shoots Max before dying herself, leaving Max hospitalized.
After recovering, Max is kidnapped by Vladimir Lem, a Russian Mafia boss working for the secretive Inner Circle led by Senator Alfred Woden. Max learns that Vlad's plan is to kill Woden to take control of the Inner Circle, and that Mona is a hired gun for Woden, tasked with killing Vlad and Max. Vlad injures Max and leaves him for dead in a burning building, but Mona rescues him. Together, they go to Woden's mansion to save him from Vlad.
At the mansion, Mona hesitates to kill Max due to her feelings for him. Vlad shoots Mona when she refuses to follow orders. Woden appears in a wheelchair and is killed during a struggle with Vlad. Max fights Vlad, ultimately killing him after a firefight and a chase through the mansion. Mona dies in Max's arms—though her fate depends on the difficulty setting, with her surviving on the very hard difficulty. The game concludes with Max finally coming to terms with his wife’s death.
