Maximum Force - Classic Arcade Light Gun Game (Atari/Mesa Logic 1997)
Taking a closer look at the classic 90's arcade light gun game Maximum Force! The game was developed by Mesa Logic and first released to arcades by Atari in 1997.
A year later in 1998 Atari released an Area 51 and Maximum Force Duo cab, that featured both games in a single cabinet. The combination of the two likely had a strong influence on the game becoming a commercial success; this was despite the game receiving heavy scrutiny from gaming critics.
Players took on the role of an anti-terror agent who's tasked with defeating a crooked mafia cartel. While players started out with a single hand gun, there were power-ups that unlocked additional weapons in the game, such as a machine gun and shotgun.
There was also a grenade icon that often appears at the bottom of the screen, shooting it obliterates virtually everything on the screen.
The whole game consisted of just 3 short stages, including an airport cargo dock, a bank, and a jungle.
Developers made use of digitized video in the game's development. The stage backgrounds were mostly CGI, coupled with full motion video recordings for the real life characters portrayed in the game.
The game ran on Atari's Co-Jag arcade hardware.
