I love this mech, I used a lot when I played other Mechwarrior games, like Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries, and Mechwarrior IV. This is primarily a ammunition based mech, and my favorite weapon was and is the autocannon 2. I removed the two energy weapons that came with this added double heat sinks, changed the structure to Endo-Steel, up armored it, added case to the torso, changed the engine to a more powerful XL Engine 325.
This mech lives up to its nickname in that, it can maul enemy mechs at any range. The 6 AC-2s can chew up any mech large or small. When I used this mech in Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance I added 8 autocannon 2s, and fired them in all fire mode. In that game, AC-2s didn't generated any heat; however, in Mechwarrior Online AC-2s do generate heat. This is why I added 3 double heat sinks.
The history of the Mauler is very checkered, and it had many problems. It was developed by the Capellan Confederation alongside the Cataphract, but it was adopted by the Draconis Combine when Earthwerks sold the design to Luthien Armor Works. The Kuritans made their own version in the Daboku Project. There were many problems with their adoption, like having structural design problems. Problems with the ammunition feeding system which caused jams. Poor structural design problems which caused false alarms for the ejection system when the mech got hit hard in the torso area. Most of the problems were ironed out with the MAL-1R model which was introduced in 3048.
New technologies, like double heat sinks, ultra autocannon, ER PPC, structural, and armor technologies were incorporated in later models. This mech is an iconic mech, because they were used effectively in the Clan War in the Battle of Tukayyid 3052. The cover of Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries has a Mauler on it.
