Secret Skunk Works initiatives like the "Advanced Short Take-off/Vertical Landing," aimed to give the Marine Corps a modernized version of the A/V-8 B Harrier jump-jet. These projects were all merged into the Joint Strike Fighter after the Cold War. It was the F-4 Phantom in the mid-1960s, which a marine, airman, or sailor could fly. Like the F-4, there are multiple F-35 variants for each of the military branches. The F-35C, often known as "Charlie," was developed for the US Navy, and is nearly as stealthy as the F-22, thanks to the lessons learned from the F-22 program. The F-35C has larger internal fuel tanks than the F-35 A or B, making it ready for long-distance blue-water operations. It also has the longest wingspan of any F-35 model, measuring 43 feet as compared to 35 feet for the A and B. With no decrease in range or payload, it can fly at the slower speeds, necessary for carrier landings, due to its wider wingspan. With these enhancements, the F-35C is ready to set sail on US aircraft carriers.
