"The land of Gargore is a mass of warring kingdoms, containing 16 different cults, 16 different types of enemy troops and 8 types of locations. However, even the mightiest army fears a 'fanatic', a solitary warrior who lives to fight and conquer and is remembered according to the number of his victories and the greatness of his deeds. You are one such Fanatic, a magical warrior with the strength of an army, the might of a thousand men. Now is your chance to achieve fame and glory for yourself in the battle scarred land of Gargore. Defeat the ravaging hordes of monsters, conquer the world and bring peace to the warring kingdoms. Good luck, it won't be easy!" - Onslaught packaging

Onslaught is an action video game that was released by Hewson in 1989 for the Amiga and subsequently ported to the Atari ST, PC and Sega Mega Drive. It was ported to Mega Drive in 1991.

The game was advertised as a fantasy platform beat'em up with an eerie soundtrack and graphic violence, with strong imagery of blood, gore and warfare. I personally found the game to be lacking in all of the above features. It's also shallow in terms of gameplay and extremely repetitive.

The goal is to conquer all lands on the map. Temples and Oracle can't be conquered. You lose if you die, which happens when either your health or mana are depleted. Most enemy attacks deplete health, while colliding with mounted enemies depletes mana. You also can fail your conquest but not die if you are defeated by a boss or if you are "overrun". You are "overrun" when enemy onslaught reaches maximum level. The gauge with a banner near your mana and health bars (scrolls, actually) shows the level of enemy onslaught. Each time an enemy appears, onslaught rises, and each time an enemy is killed, it lowers. Capturing enemy artifact stops onslaught level from rising, then you have to kill all remaining enemies, since they will still spawn until onslaught level drops to zero.

To conquer a kingdom, you have to fight through its hordes, then invade their castle, then defeat their wizardlord. To route the hordes you have to pick up an artifact from an elevated platform on the right edge of the level. To invade the castle, you have to pick up an artifact at the top right corner of the level. Then you fight a shooter boss fight.

After some time on the map, "time passes". This allows some random events to happen. They are: rebellions, crusades and plagues. These can be dealt with in one press of a "B" button if you have the right Temple item, or you can deal with them like the Fanatic deals with any other problem: with violence, and just punch the plague out of your kingdom, one sick man at a time. Choosing to fight a rebellion forces you to start combat from your own castle, which normally only happens if you are "overrun". After capturing an artifact on the right edge of the level, you proceed to fight the hordes. Temple items can also be used to establish or destroy your kingdoms without having to fight the locals.

After beating the game, I show all Temple items, and I show how they are used. Sadly, I couldn't figure out what does second to last Temple item (orange face) do. I'm assuming it has something to do with bosses, but it's just a guess. This game only allows playing either music or sound. I choose music, and then make a showcase of sounds at the end of the video. -
