Mega Man X Perfect Challenge: Avalanche Yeti (No Damage, Buster Only)
Difficulty: 5/10
Luck Factor: 5/10
Why do one quarter of the Maverick stages in this game have to be on-rails shooters? I don't necessarily mind the genre, but when I'm playing Mega Man X I'd much rather be doing 2D platforming than this, not to mention the fact that both the on-rails shooter stages in this game are terrible. There isn't much to this one other than an annoying amount of memorization, a lot of auto-scroller tedium and what honestly feels like a little bit of luck with whether the enemies actually get hit by your shots.
Other than boredom, Avalanche Yeti is certainly the main threat here. His attacks are annoying, especially in the first phase, in that it feels too dangerous to stay close to him because of his fast speed but also too dangerous to stay far away from him because it's harder to react to him when he's off camera. This is easier to deal with in later phases because of how much he prioritizes using his digging attack, but that attack presents his Shoryuken out of the snow feels like it sometimes just hits you even if you dodge it correctly. The third phases, despite being very short, is the most dangerous and luck-based. The snowflakes falling from the ceiling can easily get in your path while trying to dodge Avalanche Yeti and it will usually require both good reactions and a fair bit of luck to get a pattern in the final phase that will allow you to win.
By the way, despite my problems with this stage, I have to thank the developers for the strange decision to make Avalanche Yeti's freezing attack do no damage and to give you temporary invincibility upon breaking out. I have absolutely no idea how I got lucky enough to break out without taking a hit, but considering I never want to play this stage again, I'll take what I can get.
