Capcom brought a new version of the Blue Bomber to the 16-bit era not unlike how Star Trek provided a new version of the series in the late 80’s. Much of the fundamentals were the same, but the cast is new and some new wrinkles were added. Mega Man X is an upgraded version of the original and can certainly do more in terms of movement. Developer Capcom also added the ability to give X new upgrades that allow him to reach places he wouldn’t be able to before. There are also energy tanks and health upgrades throughout the game to make it easier when you reach the final section. Most are easy enough to find, but a few will test your abilities.

Platforming also got a bit of an upgrade in the new installment. Because of X’s new abilities, the game design got an overhaul. Many levels among the eight Maverick stages have multiple paths; many of them leading to secrets. The order in which you play the levels will also have an impact on how easy or difficult some of the stages are. This is a very clever touch that adds a strong layer of depth to the game.

In terms of difficulty, it doesn’t quite reach the early Mega Man titles. In fact, the only parts where the game really shows its teeth are with the Sigma bosses. Otherwise, it’s middle of the road throughout, which is probably the right approach for a new series. Oh, it’ll get you if you’re not careful, but good platforming skills will get you through most of this.

Visually, the game is terrific with very few moments of slowdown. The new enemies are interesting and the eight Mavericks you fight are different enough from past iterations by leaning into the animal motif rather than the elemental.

The true highlight, however, is the soundtrack, which ranks as among the very best in the Mega Man library, modern or classic. Just about every tune here is first-rate. Storm Eagle, Boomer Kuwanger, Spark Mandrill, Sigma 1 and Sigma Wolf are among the highlights.

Mega Man had become a bit moribund in the later NES installments, but these little tweaks, coupled with some major gameplay upgrades, proved the formula can still be a winning one.
