So our first cutscene shows us one of the things central to the plot here, the Jakob Elevator, which serves as transportation to the moon as a new safe haven for humans during the war. A transport falls off and crashes into the ground. Inside said transport is Sigma. A whole lot of Sigmas actually. But it turns out, it's just a whole bunch of New Generation Reploid copying Sigma's body, for protection during the accident. In the middle of it is Lumine, who's the director of the Jakob Project.

But enough on that, Mavericks detected near the forest, time for our intro stage. The Tag Team mechanic from X7 returns, but it's been fine tuned, like allowing characters in reserve to recover health, automatically changing to the reserve when the first one loses all health, and allowing them to be revived after a while, and so on. We're also introduced to the Double Attack, which can be activated after a gauge fills up next to the health bars. It essentially acts as a screen clearing move, and can do a lot of damage to bosses. Anyway, our job is to hunt down this giant enemy crab mechaniloid going berserk. We start out as X and Axl and engage it normally. After sending it away with a few blasts to the head, X leaves with a sample for Alia to analyze. Zero comes in later and seconds later we encounter it again at the waterfall. Though one use of the Double Attack makes short work of it. Axl leaves with another sample for Alia and X comes back shortly afterwards. The final confrontation with the crab has it act as a wall of doom as it marches toward you blocking your attacks. You'll need to use a breaking move (X's full charge shot, Zero's triple slash, or consecutive fire from Axl) to lower it's defense so you can damage it. The Double Attack will do the most damage and will knock it out in no time.

But our victory is short live as a barrage of missiles comes down near our location. The origin is none other than Vile, back once again and looking more like Boba Fett than ever. And he has Lumine in his clutches. All he alludes to what he plans to do with him (yes, him) is just something about a new world. __
