They Cleared a Kilometer-Long Jungle-Like Sidewalk ! [BY @CleanupMowing]

In the heart of Dong Hoi city, Quang Binh, Vietnam, a group of dedicated individuals from rural farming backgrounds known as the Clean up Mowing team have embarked on a mission to reclaim nearly a kilometer of long-forgotten sidewalk. Hidden beneath six years of overgrown grass and stubborn weeds, the sidewalk had become unrecognizable and unusable—so much so that many locals didn’t even know it existed. Determined to bring it back to life, the team committed to 10 days of hard labor to clear the mess and make the area safe and accessible again.
Armed with modest tools like grass trimmers, brush cutters, sickles, scythes, rakes, and shovels, the team methodically cuts down the overgrowth, gathers the debris, and disposes of it properly. Instead of letting the cut grass decompose on the spot—an approach that might seem easier—they take the extra step to remove all plant waste. Why? Because piles of decaying vegetation can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and attract disease-carrying rodents like rats and mice. In a tropical environment like Quang Binh, this poses serious health risks, including dengue fever, malaria, and leptospirosis.
Each day’s work follows a carefully staged process. The team begins with a full assessment of the area, identifying both light and heavy overgrowth and any hidden hazards such as rocks or broken pavement. This helps them strategize and bring the right tools to each section. When machines can’t reach tight corners or delicate areas, manual tools allow for precise, controlled clearing—essential near curbs, drains, and property edges. In places where the sidewalk has been buried under years of dirt and roots, they even uncover sunken pavement, proving just how much damage the vegetation had done.
Beyond mere clearing, the team understands that real restoration means pulling weeds out by their roots to prevent quick regrowth. Many of the plants have deeply entrenched roots that sneak through pavement cracks, lifting tiles and damaging the structure. Sidewalks made of bricks or unique stonework require especially gentle handling to avoid long-term damage, and that’s where manual labor truly shines. This slow, deliberate method helps preserve historical surfaces and spot hidden issues before they worsen.
Despite the physical strain and hot, humid weather—made worse by seasonal flooding—the Clean up Mowing crew remains undeterred. Their mission is about more than just aesthetics. By transforming neglected paths into clean, safe walkways, they’re reclaiming public space and revitalizing civic pride. They also go above and beyond by helping neighbors in need, assisting the elderly and others who can’t maintain their own yards.
Their dedication is fueled by a deep sense of community responsibility. Where others saw an impossible mess, they saw potential. With grit, patience, and a clear vision, the Clean up Mowing team reminds us all that small acts of care can spark big changes. Their work isn’t just about trimming grass—it’s about rebuilding connections, fostering public health, and proving that with teamwork and perseverance, even the most forgotten spaces can bloom again.
