Metro 2033 - post-apocalyptic novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky, which describes the life of people in the Moscow subway after a nuclear war on Earth.

The book tells the story of the survivors of a nuclear war. In the novel, the war is mentioned only in passing. As a result of the exchange of nuclear strikes, all major cities were wiped off the face of the earth. Almost all the action takes place in the Moscow subway, where people live in the stations and in the passages. Due to prompt actions of civil defense services, the subway managed to shield from radiation: almost all stations were closed hermetic seals, and ventilation and water supply systems activated anti-radiation filters. At the same time, only less than half of the stations are inhabited: some are abandoned, some are isolated by the collapse of tunnels, some are burnt out. Some stations are overrun by creatures from the surface.

The subway inhabitants feed on what they were able to grow in the tunnels. These are mostly mushrooms that do not require light, but some stations also grow potatoes, tomatoes and cucumbers. Many stations also raise pigs and other animals. A number of stations are supplied with electricity from generators of various types, but due to their low power, the stations often have only low-power emergency lighting. Most everyday items (excluding those originally located in the subway) as well as weapons, medicine, fuel, etc. are obtained by numerous stalkers, periodically climbing into the dilapidated city. Trade operates in the underground world, and the universal currency is 5.45 × 39 mm cartridges, made before the War.

Soon after the nuclear war, the centralized subway system disintegrated. Stations began to exist separately. Some united around ideas, religions, stronger stations, etc.

Some stations are independent (e.g. Kuznetsky Most, Paveletskaya). Some stations are occupied by organized crime ("Kitay-gorod," "Novye Cheryomushki," "Profsoyuznaya") or exist in anarchy. Groups trade with each other, make alliances, fight.

The city lying on the surface was virtually undamaged during the war, but under the effects of time and an aggressive environment, many buildings have become dilapidated and crumbled. Plants and animals have greatly mutated.
