In this video, I cover the basics of how to properly use a microphone as a Twitch streamer. This video isn't professional-grade recording advice but should be suitable for streamers of all sizes. I watch way too many streamers let expensive microphones go to waste - this is my part in stopping that.

I don't discuss gear choices or setup instructions, only how to use the gear you have well. No amount of fancy microphones, preamps, or processing can make up for shoddy technique.

Transcribed notes from the video:

DISTANCE
- depends on skill and desired tone
- the proximity effect
- distance vs noise isolation
- ideally 4-6in, 8-10in is fine
- consistency is important
MIC POSITION
- mic responsiveness and
polar patterns (cardioid)
- the 40% rule
- positioning for breathing
- pop filters
MIC HANDLING
- do not touch the stand
- shock mounts
- phantom power
- stand forward
- cable wrapping
MOVEMENT
- "working the mic"
- mouth angling
BREATHING
- breathing away from the mic
VOLUME
- the VU meter
- volume vs. distance

In the video I say I have an MXL 2009. This is an error, it is actually an MXL 2006.
