0And now for the next part. On the unpatched game there's a secret Fly scroll hidden that allows you to get on top of the roof of Buccaneer's Lair. Clicking on the wall you fly up to (be careful since the tower will try to fireball you!) will take you to the Shrine of the Gods. RUN INSIDE so none of your characters get killed, then click the shrine (once per character) to get +20 to all stats.
I'd certainly have at least a Gate Master NPC in your party to allow you to leave to a town with all your loot. I also had a Cartographer to pinpoint all the loot to save time.
After you've teleported back, you can keep the Gate Master or fire him.
