How a superflat survival world works:
1. You create a world without structures and only a bonus chest.
2. You plant the sapling you get from the bonus chest and try to get Iron from a zombie.
3. You try to get a villager to trade with a wandering trader.
4. When you start getting stronger you can start building, except most blocks are really difficult to obtain.
