Minisforum has confirmed pricing for its new MS-S1 MAX small form factor PC powered by AMD Strix Halo. The official retail price is set at $2879, but the system will launch at $2299. As with many Minisforum promotions, this looks more like a fake discount than a real launch deal, since prices rarely change afterward. Either way, both numbers are high for what the system offers. As noted with other SFF systems powered by the Ryzen Al MAX 395, pricing usually lands between $1500 and $2000. The higher cost mainly comes from the use of 128GB LPDDR5X memory, which is soldered and cannot be upgraded. At launch, the MS-S1 MAX will be sold in a single configuration featuring the MAX+395 APU, 128GB of RAM, and 2TB of storage. Minisforum's earlier MS series has been popular in forums and communities, thanks to features like support for discrete GPUs, built-in power supplies, and expanded storage options that made them attractive as compact servers. This model does have some advantages, including a 2U rack-mountable design, dual 10GbE networking, and Wi-Fi 7 support. However, the lack of memory upgrades limits flexibility. For Minisforum products, one must get used to preorders often going live before reviews, and past products have been abandoned quickly. A good example is the AMD-backed 3-in-1 V3 tablet, which has not received a single update more than a year and a half after release.
