Keiichi Hara's 2015 film "Miss Hokusai", is an adaptation of the manga that follows the life of O-Ei, one of painter Hokusai's daughters. The film is fascinated not only with the beauty of nature and life, but also with how obsession effects our lives. Every character in "Miss Hokusai" is involved in art, whether they make it or simply admire it. Yet, they also fail at some aspect of their personal lives, be it giving attention to their family or experiencing life outside of painting so as to make better paintings.
In this video, I'm going to analyze the internal struggle of O-Ei and Tetsuzo, and how their conflict perfectly encapsulates the idea of art vs. life.
