๐ I have a MiSTer! Let's try out some early arcade classics from 1978-1981.
First I play the biggest classic of them all, Taito's 'Space Invaders' from 1978, a game that's still fun and challenging and full of little fun details, such as the title screen animations where the invader steals and flips the Y in PLAY, and the red invader shooting the extra C in INSERT COIN.
Next is 'Galaxian' from 1979, my all-time favourite fixed shooter.
Nintendo's 'Radar Scope' from 1979 was another fixed shooter, notable for having 2D graphics with perspective, simultaneous music and sound effects (which technically, Space Invaders also has), and being designed by Shigeru Miyamoto himself.
The next game, 'Mars' from 1981 is a dual joystick shooter, one of the first of its kind, from the year before 'Robotron' and came out the same year as Taito's 'Space Dungeon'. It is also notable for being one of the few arcade games developed in Taiwan.
'Gorf' from 1981 is the bootleg remix compilation of arcade games. Its graphics is directly stolen from 'Space Invaders' and 'Galaxian', with slightly modified colors. The 'Galaxians' level is even called GALAXIANS. And to make it feel like its truly a bootleg electro remix, it has robotic voice synthesis.
The final game, 'Space Panic' from 1980, is one of the first platformers, probably the inspiration for Nintendo's 'Donkey Kong'.
The MiSTer is a FPGA-based open source emulation system that emulates a large variety of computers, consoles and arcade games from the 1990s and older.
