๐ I have a MiSTer! Today I'm testing out an unstable build of the upcoming MiSTer Saturn core from 2023-11-14. Let's try out some classic Sega Saturn games. Today I'm playing 'Fighting Vipers' (1996), a conversion of a Sega arcade fighting game. It is superficially similar to Virtua Fighter. It has a strip mechanic, where the clothes of the fighters will be destroyed during battle, leaving them more and more naked.
'Bug!' is a 3D platformer with sprite characters and enemies, predating the genre-defining Super Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot, which both came out in 1996. It's interesting that Realtime Associates solved the 3D platforming problem by having traditional 2D gameplay when moving in the X axis, and the Z-axis is mostly used to move between different layers of 2D levels, often without enemies. I can speculate that this choice also helps with saving memory on enemy sprite data by not having them face forwards or backwards, only needing a single sideways animation that can be mirrored.
'Criticom' (1997) is a bad fighting game by Kronos Digital Entertainment, who also made 'Cardinal Syn' (1998), a *slightly* better fighting game.
The MiSTer is a FPGA-based open source emulation system that emulates a large variety of computers, consoles and arcade games from the 1990s and older.
