車型介紹
新巴在 1998 年接辦中巴路線後，曾因應 15 線（中環碼頭←→山頂）來回程必經、最低只有 4 米的加列山道天橋，向丹尼士招手分兩批購入 60 部配矮版都普車身的 10.4 米丹尼士三叉戟（有關資料請往「新巴篇 丹尼士三叉戟（都普）空調十點四／十點六米」的介紹）。轉眼十多年後，這批車輛將由 2017 年底至 2018 年第三季陸續屆滿 18 年車齡「死線」悉數退役，令新巴須物色繼任車款維持中半山路線服務。
其時丹尼士三叉戟車系早於 2002 年停產，分別由兩軸的 E400 型及三軸的 E500 型取而代之。雖然丹尼士已在 2016 年推出 E40D 型作為 E400 型的後繼車款，但新巴並沒有因應買入 E40D 型，只購入配上改良版車身的 E400 型。

A Kowloon Motor Bus Enviro400 in Mong Kok, Hong Kong.
In 2009, Kowloon Motor Bus and Citybus of Hong Kong received two (one for each operator) air-conditioned Enviro400 for evaluation, both of which entered service in February 2010. Citybus introduced one more in July 2010.
In November 2010, Alexander Dennis had confirmed an extra order of 38 Enviro400s from Citybus at the press conference of Euro Bus Expo 2010 held in Birmingham, UK; these buses entered service in 2011. A further order of 20 Enviro400s had been placed and these buses started to enter service in 2013.
MTR Corporation also ordered nine Enviro400s for MTR Bus service, these buses entering service in 2012. Two more Enviro400s are expected to enter service in 2018.
Kowloon Motor Bus received a further 50 Enviro400s between 2012 and 2013.
New World First Bus ordered 60 Enviro 400s with Facelift body (similar to Enviro400 MMC), they entered service in 2016/2017.
