MMORPG Analysis - Is Retention More Important Than Box Sales?
0In today's episode of MMORPG Analysis, we dive into player retention numbers, and how they mean more than box sales in today's era. While 110k sales might sound good for Mortal Online 2, the question remains: can they retain those players?
Looking at MMOs as a whole, you generally only have 5% to 7% who will stick with your game long-term, regardless of bugs, patches, changes to the core mechanics over time, and beyond. So seeing a 90% loss over time is fairly normal as far as MMORPG populations are concerned.
That being said, the loss of players over time used to have a far gentler curve. That is, we used to see those players falling off over the course of years, not within the first 3 - 6 months after a game has launched.
Which leads us to the conversation today: is player retention more important than box sales?
