This is a marketing piece I animated after animation on Moana wrapped. This one was especially fun to work on! I did a few different 2D passes to pitch different ideas to Ron & John, maybe I'll post a breakdown as well. Also bonus points to anyone who can guess how many Kakamora there are 😬 ...so...many...coconuts...😖

Animation Process Time! I've posted this finished piece before but here's a little look into the process. This is back from when I was an apprentice on Moana in 2016. The 'Final' one has completed hair simulation and lighting.

1,2,3 - I decided to plan out a couple ideas with some drawings first and present these ideas to the directors. By doing these in 2D I was able to scribble these out really quickly and start a discussion with Ron Clements and John Musker before even starting anything in CG. They ended up choosing the version where Maui turns into the bug.

4- I roughly blocked out the shot following my drawings. For this I didn't shoot any live action (I usually do), I just followed my drawings and looked for specific reference online. The directors ended up changing their minds. It was decided in the room that maybe he could brandish his weapon instead and scare the Kakamora away.

5- With the idea changing, I wanted to quickly mock it up. So I spent the rest of the day making broad changes, animating the new camera, and drawing in something to represent the hoard of coconuts. I showed them the next day and they were on board!
6- In the next version, I splined Maui so that he's roughly on 1's and not just in stepped blocking. There was also a suggestion to add a handful of Kakamora that jump out to threaten Maui to help motivate him brandishing his mighty hook! There were so many Kakamora that for now I just represented them as basic spheres.
7- This is very similar to the previous version but with the last little Kakamora now fully animated instead of simple geo. Maui also looks over at him towards the end before looking at camera.

8- Sound! This whole time I wasn't animating with any sound, which isn't typical. So now I was able to polish and refine a lot more of the musical hits and add more flourish to Maui's face as he was making some sounds. I continued to polish the rest and animated the muscles jiggling and flexing.

9- The final step! Adding all those coconuts one by one was the final step, and probably about half my time. And that's that! If you read this far, thanks for checking this out :)
