Game Freak surprised everyone when they announced a sequel to their 3DS game Pocket Card Jockey, perhaps more so that it was coming to Apple Arcade. So for this week's video, i decided to play the first 45 minutes of this sequel. I'm fairly sure i played a demo for the 3DS version, but as that was soo many years ago i didn't really know what to expect from this game.
If i'm honest, i'd say i was pleasantly surprised. i knew about the card part and the horse racing part, but i couldn't really remember anything else about it. so i found how it was implemented in this version to be rather charming. more than once you'll hear me laugh at little at the writing in the game, and i even remarked on how impressed i was how the game uses it's story to explain how the whole Solitaire + Horse Racing mechanic even works.
That's not the only mechanic in this game tho. i was surprised by how many different mechanics and how many things you need to think about as you go about racing. for this video, i felt that the difficulty level was low enough so even tho it was a tad overwhelming having all these mechanics i never felt out of my depth and had a chance to win.
Another thing that surprised me was how much i enjoyed the game's art style. i wasn't expecting too much from it, i remembered the games unique look for the horses, but i found the presentation and the art style to work really well together and never a distractiion.
Overall, it is a game i'd reconmend Apple Arcade owners to try. But it's also one i don't think, nor do i expect, that is for everyone. If people bounced off it, i think that would be fair, but at the very least it's worth trying.
