Taito published Phoenix, a fixed shooter arcade game, in December 1980. In January 1981, Centuri and Amstar Electronics introduced it first in Europe, then in the Americas.
One of the first video arcade game bosses to be offered as a distinct challenge is the Phoenix mothership. It became one of Centuri's most popular titles after receiving positive reviews from both critics and customers.
At the bottom of the screen, the player is in control of a spaceship that moves horizontally while firing upward. On the screen above the player's ship, enemies—usually one of two types of birds—appear and shoot at it while sometimes diving in its direction to try to crash into it. The ship has a shield that may be activated to zap any extraterrestrial entities who try to collide with it. While the shield is in use, the player is immobile and must wait about five seconds before using it again.
