7Kakurenbo Battle Monster Tactics (literally: Hide and Seek Battle Monster Tactics) is a fairly unique GBC RPG that's different from anything I've played before. Monster Hunting season is here and various Monster Hunters take part in a competition where the goal is to catch the biggest monster out there. Pokémon, anybody? But even though you'll catch the monsters you defeat throughout the adventure, you can never use them in battle. Rather, you'll learn their skills, and each monster will give a specific skill that will go to one of your party members. If, for some reason, you don't get the skill in battle because the monster lacked power, you can use their "prints" or "fossils" to revive them, power them up, and then destroy them again to, this time, secure the skill. There are different cities underground at various levels, from B1 to B9, which you will gradually gain access to to enter the dungeons to fight monsters. Every dungeon consists of various "levels" and one or more boss levels. Once all bosses of a floor are beaten, you can descend deeper into the dungeon. If you manage to clear all the levels perfectly, i.e. do not let one of your characters die in battle and destroy all monsters before finishing the leader off, you'll sometimes unlock a new party member who will join your team. Battles are rather unique and really do feel like hide and seek. You basically move your party members in pitch black corridors, and only the light in front of you shows you what's ahead. Turn a corner and BLAM! there might be a monster waiting in ambush. Attack it with one of your spells, and run away. Then it'll be the monsters' turn to look for you, and once they find you and attack you, they'll run away, too. Gameplay proceeds in this manner until either leader dies, yours or the enemy's. The game is pretty fun, but it can become a little repetitive in the long run. The music is pretty bad, though, with a select handful of tunes only being average. Secret levels can be entered with the use of gemstones, and they are mostly obtained by fulfilling certain NPC requests or by getting perfects in boss levels. Otherwise, if you run out of them, you'll have to spend your money at the casino and hope for the best. My playthrough is a 100% run of the game, in the sense that all levels were cleared with perfects. I only missed out on a few NPC rewards, as far as I'm aware. Oh! and Toppi is pretty cute. =)
