Moonlighter is a mixed bag at the moment. It's clear that the game is made with a lot of love and care, as can be evidenced from the lore segments, the amazing art and the chill soundtrack, but...the gameplay loop leaves much to be desired. It combines games like Recettear and Binding of Isaac into a product that is a jack of all trades but master of none.

The roguelite dungeon and upgrade system, while nice, means that slogging through dungeons is more a tedious activity than anything else. It doesn't help that the game does not have full mouse support - ew. While you can rebind your keybindings, the bindings that were suggested by their QA team feel rather awkward. The default keybindings wouldn't work well for me either, and I vehemently refuse to play twinstick games with a controller, simply because I'm too well-versed at Binding of Isaac with keyboard.

And then you take your loot, if you don't die along the way, sell it all by finding the correct price, use the gold to buy upgrades in various manners, rinse and repeat. This loop, while interesting at first, will QUICKLY grow stale over time.

Surprisingly, despite all that, I still spend close to 3 hours playing it. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's the charm that's shining through, despite the flaws.
