Welcome back to the Side Quest Podcast! This time around, I’ve got a special guest host stepping in while the Son of Rad Chaser is off on his annual one-month sabbatical doing his own side quest with his New Japan Pro Wrestling podcast. Enter Maya — you’ve probably already heard her voice in some of our recent videos, and now she’s here in the co-host chair to bring her retro gaming wisdom and perspective to the conversation.
In this episode, we dig into what makes the NES Quest so special — not just building the collection of 100 new NES games this year, but the real struggle of actually finding time to play the games we’re picking up. We pull back the curtain on what it’s like being a two-man production (sometimes feeling more like a one-and-a-half-man show) — recording, filming, editing, and starring in everything ourselves. There’s no production crew, no assistants, no behind-the-scenes team. Just us, the cameras, and the chase.
And that’s the heart of it: the chase. We talk about how it’s often more fun and more exciting than the games themselves. Getting out into the world, hunting for carts, meeting shop owners, talking with other collectors, and finding random treasures — that’s what makes it meaningful. Sometimes you sit down with the actual game and realize, okay, this is rough, but the story of how it got into your hands? That’s the magic.
We also touch on our plans for MetroCon (which, at the time of this recording, we hadn’t gone to yet — but by the time you’re watching this, the videos are already rolling out). We talked about what it might feel like being in a huge convention space packed with people, the sensory overload, and whether the energy fuels you or drains you. Spoiler: it can be both.
From there, the conversation drifts into stufflust — both the direct kind (you see a rare game, you need it now) and the subtle kind (the slow burn of always wanting to add just one more to the collection). We explore how that hunger drives collectors and creators alike, and whether it’s healthy or just another way to fill a void.
And, of course, we give the Son of Rad Chaser his props while he’s away. His NJPW project is a side quest all on its own, and it’s good to remind ourselves that chasing doesn’t always have to be about video games. It’s about passion, focus, and giving yourself permission to go all-in on something you love — whether it’s cartridges, consoles, or wrestling rings in Japan.
This is only the second Side Quest Podcast, but it already feels like something special. Not quite the Chaser Bros Podcast, but a worthy offshoot — the kind of thing we can do once in a while to expand the conversation beyond just what’s in the game case.
