Johnny Cage and his friend Adam embark on an Indiana Jones-esque adventure in an ancient temple, battling monsters and facing the undead guardian Katara Vala. The escapade takes a tragic turn when Adam succumbs to a pool of liquid mercury. Post a victorious encounter with the final guardian, the revelation hits that it was all a movie set. Johnny, hopeful for a career resurgence, faces skepticism from the Spielberg-like director, who only lent his support as a favor.

Reality crashes down at home as Johnny's wife, Cris, confronts him about their financial struggles, exacerbated by Johnny's lavish spending. Despite Cris's pleas, Johnny remains adamant, asserting the importance of projecting success to revive "Johnny Cage." After Cris leaves, a new challenge emerges in the form of Kenshi Takahashi seeking to reclaim the ancient katana Sento. In a clash of wills, Johnny emerges triumphant but remains unconvinced of Kenshi's Taira Clan lineage. As Johnny anticipates police intervention, he encounters Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion outside, initially dismissing it as a prank orchestrated by Cris. The situation takes a serious turn when Liu Kang, demonstrating godly powers, convinces Johnny of the divine nature of their encounter. Intrigued and puzzled, Johnny questions his unexpected selection by a god, and Liu Kang expresses belief in Johnny's potential to reshape the trajectory of his life.
