Mortal Kombat 2: How & Why Scorpion Can Return In the Sequel
Death has not prevented Scorpion from appearing in the final moments of Mortal Kombat (2021), and it most likely will not stop the character from returning in Mortal Kombat 2. The announcement that a sequel is in the works came after months of almost no information regarding the future of the franchise on the big screen. Although Mortal Kombat had a modestly successful box-office performance, the film was a strong enough hit on HBO Max to warrant greenlighting a sequel. After the first movie chose not to show the tournament, Mortal Kombat 2 could be when the clash between the realms finally takes place.
Scorpion's rise in popularity among both fans of the games and the general audience has made the character one of the most recognizable faces in the franchise. Once just one of the many playable characters, Scorpion has since been given a tragic background broiled with revenge and is now on the cover of the latest games in the series. In the movies, the Scorpion's journey was no different. A glorified cameo in the 1995's Mortal Kombat, Hanzo Hasashi was a central element of the 2021 reboot. Rather than telling the entire movie from Hanzo's perspective, however, the new Mortal Kombat chose to follow an original character linked to Scorpion. Cole Young, a present-day MMA fighter, is a distant descendant of Hanzo who was raised without knowing of his connection to the Shirai Ryu clan. Although Cole and Hanzo had a brief interaction towards the end of the film, not much has been explored of the relationship between Scorpion and his heir.
As every great Mortal Kombat story features Scorpion in some capacity, it is hard to imagine that Mortal Kombat 2 will not bring the haunted warrior back. Having walked in and out of NetherRealm several times in different media, including the 2021 movie, Scorpion does not see death as an obstacle strong enough to prevent him from continuing to fight. Even though his revenge against Mortal Kombat's Sub-Zero was fulfilled by the end of the first film, there are still a few reasons why Hanzo could head back to Earthrealm. Mortal Kombat 2 could expand on the previous film's tease of Bi-Han’s reincarnation process and show his return as Noob Saibot. Should that be the case, Hanzo would most likely pay another visit to the world of the living for another clash with his arch-nemesis.
Now that the final tournament is close to happening, Mortal Kombat 2 may also have Scorpion in its competitor roster. As the 2021 movie did not explore Hanzo's journey in NetherRealm, it is hard to know where exactly the character's loyalties lie at the moment. However, if the sequel follows the saga's most common lore, perhaps Scorpion will fight as Shinnok's champion. To make up for the absence of Hanzo's reincarnation plotline in the first Mortal Kombat, it is important that the sequel at least detail what the terms of the deal between Scorpion and the leader of NetherRealm are.
Scorpion is a key element to the Mortal Kombat mythos and so should not be left out of Mortal Kombat 2. While there was some sort of closure for the character in the first film, Scorpion’s story is far from over. Whether to continue his constant battle against Bi-Han and the Lin Kuei clan or to fight in the tournament on orders from Shinnok, Scorpion's presence in Mortal Kombat 2 is crucial for the film and the franchise as a whole.
