Mortal Kombat 12: Can Avoid MK 11's Biggest Storytelling Mistake By Doing This...
To say the Mortal Kombat series is attached to its main cast of characters is a bit of an understatement. Fighters like Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sonya, and Kano have all been around since the very first game, and although direct sequels would attempt to change things up (dropping Sonya in Mortal Kombat 2, for example) the franchise has fallen into a bit of a habit of relying on these characters to provide the main story beats, while any new people who are introduced usually only act as associate or enemy characters sprinkled throughout the story. Even some of the most interesting new fighters, like D'vorrah, Kotal Kahn, and Erron Black, are eventually sidelined to focus on a more traditional Liu Kang-versus-Shang Tsung story.
As another Shaolin warrior who also has the ability to shoot fireballs, Kai never had a chance to be as popular as Liu Kang, who had already been established as the series' de facto hero three games in a row. Now that Liu Kang has literally become a god and taken over as protector of Earthream, Kai should be given a chance to shine once again. Of course, Liu Kang's new status as God of Fire and Lighting means Kai likely won't be using Raiden's Lightning Staff (which he receives in his Mortal Kombat 4 ending, visible below from the YouTube channel MKSecrets) but he could still stand out from the pack.
Mortal Kombat 12 has seemingly been leaked by a developer on the game. Last year, rumors surfaced claiming that contrary to popular belief, NettherRealm Studios was not working on Injustice 3, but Mortal Kombat 12. Fast-forward and a new photo seems to confirm this. The image comes the way of Jonathan Andersen, a Senior Production Manager at the Chicago-based studio. Taking to Twitter, Andersen tweeted a photo of what appears to be his workspace cluttered with Injustice and Mortal Kombat artwork. That said, if you look in the top right corner, there's a file on the computer titled "MK12_Mast..." There are also other Mortal Kombat files like "Reptile."
The tweet has since been deleted, but not before the Internet got its receipt. And parts of the Internet actually think it's a deliberate leak, which aren't common, but they do happen. The main reason some Mortal Kombat fans think this is the email that's in the background, which contains the following: "our fans eagerly scrape the internet for any trace." It also says to "take extra care with this material." It's all a little bit on the nose.
As noted, the tweet with the image has since been deleted and there's been no follow-up from Andersen, NetherRealm Studios, WB Games, or any other implicated party. No matter whether or not this is a deliberate leak, this is unlikely to change. That said, if it's a deliberate leak, then an official announcement could be imminent.
As always, we will keep you updated as the situation evolves. In the meantime, take everything here -- the leak, and the speculation it has created -- with a grain of salt. While there's little room to doubt the validity of the leak, it's still a leak and not 100 percent official information straight from WB Games PR. Speaking of WB Games PR, we have reached out for a comment. While we wait for information, it's important to remember that NRS -- in particular, its creative director, Ed Boon -- has a reputation for trolling fans. This could be another elaborate example of this, but it seems unlikely.
Mortal Kombat 11 is a fantastic fighting game, but Mortal Kombat 12 needs to avoid its storytelling errors. MK 11 was arguably the most ambitious installment in NetherRealm's fighting game series yet, featuring multiple incarnations of the same characters and a time-traveling story. However, it also suffered from some pacing issues that MK 12 may wish to avoid repeating in order to be a better game.
Although there were some writing hiccups, such as Sindel's character-ruining villainy in Mortal Kombat: Aftermath, the key issue with Mortal Kombat 11's story is pacing. While it would admittedly be a bit of a challenge to incorporate every member of MK 11's large roster into the story, there are still plenty of plausible ways to do it while making sure that the narrative maintains a decent flow. However, the story doesn't allow proper time to build, and the events feel haphazard as a result.
