Mortal Kombat 3 - SNES & Genesis, Side By Side Playthrough

Mortal Kombat 3 was released for both the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in the end of 1995. While the core gameplay and content were similar between the two versions, there were some differences due to hardware limitations and various other factors.

Here's a comparison of the two versions side by side!

Graphics and Visuals:

Sega Genesis: The Genesis version of Mortal Kombat 3 has a darker color palette and slightly more detailed character sprites. However, due to the limitations of the Genesis hardware, some graphical effects and animations have been toned down compared to the arcade original.

Super Nintendo: The SNES version has a brighter color palette (due to more colors on the screen) but the sprites were generally considered less detailed than those in the Genesis version. This was due to the SNES's hardware limitations.

SNES version also had smaller resolution compared to the Genesis and stretched visuals thanks to it's odd 7/8 aspect ratio.

Sound and Music:

Sega Genesis: The Genesis version has digitized voice samples for characters, but the quality was lower compared to the arcade. The music is louder but has a distinct sound due to the Genesis sound hardware.

Super Nintendo: The SNES version's voice samples are muffled compared to Genesis Grainy and the music that is closer to the arcade original is unfortunately too quiet. Fighting sound effect however are too loud and have awkward metallic sound in them.

Control and Gameplay:

Sega Genesis: The Genesis controller has a more straightforward layout for fighting games, with a six-button configuration that closely resembled the arcade layout. This made executing special moves and combos relatively straightforward. The game also runs smoother.

Super Nintendo: The SNES controller had only four face buttons, which sometimes made it slightly more challenging to perform certain special moves and combos. However, players still learned somehow to enjoy the game effectively. Game runs a bit less smoother and the AI of computer player is often unstable or broken.

Overall Gameplay:

Both versions include the full complement of characters, stages, and gameplay modes from the arcade version.

Both the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo versions of Mortal Kombat 3 have their own strengths and weaknesses, largely influenced by the hardware capabilities. Players often chose between the two versions based on factors like graphics, sound quality, and personal preferences.

IMO, Genesis version is a better game.
