Game Description
Mortal Kombat for the Game Gear one of the five ports of the original arcade game that was announced during the Mortal Monday events and came out at 13 September 1993. This event’s main purpose was to promote the various ports that could be played at home.
Mortal Kombat is a one and one fighting game in the same vein as Street Fighter II. You select a character and you fight a two out of three round against every character, including a mirror match.
Then, three endurance matches are introduced. Those are fights against two characters that you fight one at a time. Your health is not restored between the two opponents has fought them is considered a single round. Mortal Kombat is well known for its fatality, which is hidden move performed at the end of the match against the loser.
In order to fit in the cartridge, a lot of content had to be removed from the Game Gear port. Kano and Reptile are absent and every stage but the Pit and Goro Lair had to be removed. In addition, it is not possible to perform the pit stage fatality. The port is also censored, featuring altered fatality for Johnny Cage, Rayden and Sub-Zero. However, there is a blood kode like the Sega Genesis version that will feature blood and the uncensored fatality.
This port is notable to change a few behaviours in special move. Sub-Zero’s slide will do the same damage as Cage’s shadow kick. Rayden lighting is now a full-screen attack that is bugged and can hit many times, dealing huge damage. However, it can be avoided by crouching.
On Earthrealm, a tournament is being held on Shang Tsung’s. 500 years before the current time, Shang Tsung was banished and came back with the half-human half-dragon Goro, to take control of the tournament. For 500 years, Goro held the title of champion and was undefeated. However, everything changed when the current time tournament is held, as the seven fighters who stand above the other in that tournament changed everything.

Those seven fighters are Johnny Cage, Kano, Rayden, Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Sonya Blade. As mentioned earlier, Kano is absent in this port due to space constraints but is implied to be here. Liu Kang’s ending, which states he defeated Goro and Shang Tsung to give the tournament back to the original owner, is considered canon.
