Atomic Heart is a FPS action role-playing video game developed by Mundfish and published by Focus Entertainment and 4Divinity. The game was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on February 21, 2023.

After being a massive fan of immersive sim games like Bioshock and Prey for a long time I was excited to get a game that looks to be inspired by them but with a completely different setting to give us a new interesting take on the immersive sim genre. Now finally we get to explore the world of Atomic Heart and and experience Andrew Ryan's Rapture if it was made by people that held beliefs that are opposite of his own. From pre release footage the game tends to be a bit lighter on the immersive sim factor and focus much more on combat and boss battles, with a much more of a wacky setting and art direction.

Visually Atomic Heart is absolutely stunning with everything from wider more open areas to claustrophobic underground industrial facilities, that are all populated by many objects and enemies. Combined with some of the detail in the environment and on objects and characters, I think Atomic Heart really does set a standard for how good a game can look. Especially considering how well it seems to run from my own experience and from what I have seen online.

In terms of gameplay I am hoping for something similar to other games in the immersive sim genre that combines light exploration and scavenging with intense combat encounters, and will be interested to see how much exploration and possible backtracking or side objectives impact the game.

The story and setting definitely seem quite wacky, and I hope they commit to this aspect to really sell the world they have built (after all Fort Frolic is definitely my favorite level in the original Bioshock with Sander Cohen taking center stage).

I also look forward to hearing the soundtrack has to offer after finding out it was made by Mick Gordon and the fantastic work he has done on the Doom Soundtracks amognst other games.
