A playthrough of Hi Tech Expressions' 1990 license-based game show game for the NES, MTV's Remote Control.

Remote Control was a trivia game show that ran on MTV back in the late eighties that tested contestants' knowledge of television. There were three rounds of questions, and at the end of each, the player with the lowest score was taken "off the air" when their chair got yanked through the wall. It was goofy and "edgy" in exactly the way you'd expect it to be as an MTV show.

The NES adaptation keeps the same format and sense of humor as the show, and it plays well.

Some of the questions are actually pretty hilarious. Take this question from the "Brady Physics" category, for example:

In a vaccuum and depressed, Marcia and Bobby jump from a tall building. If Marcia's mass is twice Bobby's and they both jump at the same time, who will kiss the pavement first?

A. Bobby
B. Marcia
C. They'll strike at the same time

Or this question from the "Beauties and Assassins" category:

She's the beauty who sings "Naughty Girls Need Love Too," and he shot our 35th president in Dallas. Name them.

A. Dolly Parton and Jack Ruby
B. Elke Sommers and Charles Manson
C. Samantha Fox and Lee Harvey Oswald

But the game's sense of humor is perhaps most readily apparent in its graphics. The style is unsettling to say the least, plastering what appear to be digitized images of real people's faces on the characters, but it's easily one of the most unique art styles I've ever seen in an NES game. It's straight up nightmare fuel, but it suits the tone of the game perfectly.

Beyond that, there isn't much to say about MTV's Remote Control. If you're too young to know what the Brady Bunch is, this is probably not the game for you, but if you like irreverant trivia games and have a passing familiarity with 70s and 80s TV, this is a good one to pop in with a friend for a round or two.
