MW All Main Quests, No Major Glitches (No Scroll of Windform Route) Speedrun in 36:49 (No Loads)
***Update***
The current world record for this category is now a 25:02, the video for it can be found in the playlist on my channel called "Current Best Runs".
This run differentiates itself from the route that opts for the Scroll of Windform. It is generally the best way to move quickly, without using glitches, in a short amount of time. However, there is a big catch- getting the Scroll of Windform is completely dependent on luck; a literal dice roll to see if a merchant is carrying it in their inventory. As a result, you move a lot slower, but also have to do things a bit differently. I was able to shave off more time from my last personal best of 38:04 by having better execution, and refining a relatively new tactic.
I recently discovered a somewhat significant optimization for the route- the Scroll of Celerity. This scroll fortifies Speed 10 to 30 points for 60 seconds. Some obstacles that had to be tackled to even implement it in the run were as follows:
-The mechanics of getting/using it without losing time. Firstly, having to buy the scroll means that shopping takes longer. This is mostly made up for by just practicing the shopping sequence. Second, if you have to open up your inventory to use it every time, it may not even be worth it. I figured out that you can use the Drathis Winter Guest keybind (mandatory as it is the main way you kill enemies) and press Previous Spell twice (I use C for that) in rapid succession, and this puts you right on it.
-Having enough gold. You need enough gold because you have to bribe a lot of NPC's in the run, including 1000 drakes to Crassius Curio and 1200 for the slave Falura Llevru for the Zainab Nerevarine quest. After some testing I was able to find out that you can afford to buy around 35-40 copies and still have enough, provided you bought specific amounts of the other scrolls necessary for the run. Also, I didn't want to go out of the way to have to sell more items to afford it, like the Scroll of Windform route (but that makes you move so fast, it more than makes up for it).
Notice how the effect ranges from 10 to 30 points. This means you can "re-roll" if you get a low magnitude, which just overrides it with the new randomized magnitude. However you only have so many rerolls before you would run out prematurely. This adds another level of decision making which adds to the mental load of executing the run in the sense that you need to evaluate how good your cast was, and if it is worth trying again. Generally, you want to save re-rolls for segments in which you will use the full 60 seconds. However, you should have enough to always have one up after you buy it.
Overall, I'm really satisfied with this run. I'm glad that there are still things that I'm finding to be viable, and that the execution factor can still be pushed even further than it has been ever before.
I'm going to give this category a rest and work on All Factions runs, which are a whole nother beast, but also make for a really fun and challenging run.
