My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabethh Russell is a powerful response to Lolita, published in 1955 by Russian-American novelist Vladimir Nabokov. This book is styled in a flashback, flash forward kind of way. It begins in 2017. Vanessa is 30 years old, scrolling through a Facebook post talking about an abuser. We soon learn the post is about Jacob Strane, her high school English teacher, who she is still in contact with and somewhat romantically involved. You can tell she is not going to be a reliable narrator, which considering she’s letting us know what is happening from teenagehood, works perfectly.

I really loved this book. It dealt with so many difficult subjects in a deep way.
