My Hardest GH2 Custom to Date (Rob Hubbard - Monty on the Run Theme)
Still banging away at charts and retexture stuff for marfGH, slowly but surely...I'm roughly averaging a chart every ten days or so, which is great. We're on track for a summer release.
Most of my customs are of pretty playable but I feel fairly fun songs. Chordy indie rock, some solos here and there, but nothing particularly punishing. The GH2 engine is already difficult enough to play on without me throwing plate patterns at anyone, and those just don't show up in the songs I wanna play anyway.
This, though! I've had the idea of charting more game and computer music for a while now (maybe doing a whole marfGH volume in the future of them), and this one's a stone cold CLASSIC. This is the theme to a highly regarded Commodore 64 platformer called Monty on the Run (natch), and the guy who wrote it, Rob Hubbard, is a legend of SID music. Seriously, none of that is news to anyone who actively follows the SID scene like I don't. That said, legends are legends for a reason. Patterns as fast as the ones at the end of this song probably shouldn't be possible on the SID, and it's catchy as all get out to boot. (If you remember which meme used this song to pretty amazing effect, you get a pinned comment.)
I was able to pull stems out of this one. sidplay lets you mute each of the emulated SID's three channels, and I captured 'em separately and then did some light editing to produce a "guitar" part and a "bass" part. I charted the initial pass of that solo drunk in a call with friends, and I've just been making sure it's as accurate as I can make it since. With this many unique parts to the song, reductions took a while, and everything was almost eaten last minute by a weird FeedBack glitch that Moonscraper helped fix, at the cost of having to redo the fretmapping and Face-Off phrases. Messy business, charting for this game.
I think my Retribution rechart is a lot harder in spots, but this is more consistently fast and crazy, so I'm calling it harder. Looks like a lot of fun though. I could probably pull out a pretty damn good run of this one on controller, but definitely not on guitar. I'll be very curious to try it myself either tonight or tomorrow.
This one will appear on the Volume 0 reissue, along with nine other new songs. Gotta give you a reason to redownload that thing after Volume 1 comes out, yeah?
