My Thoughts on Sports Card Grading Companies, From a Novice Grader's Perspective!
What’s up guys,
Mainely Hockey Cards here, and today, let’s talk about grading. Grading is one of the most controversial parts about the sports card industry, and for good reason. We pay copious amounts of money to third parties to look at our cards and give them a rating on a numerical scale that can sometimes exponentially change the value of the card for better or worse.
Some people think grading is a scam, and that’s fine. But, at the end of the day, graded cards drive the monetary side of the industry. High graded cards, typically, outperform raw cards by a large margin. Of course, if your Auston Matthews Young Guns comes back an 8, you might’ve just wanted to keep it raw. In which case, you might crack the slab, try and re-submit, or sell as a near mint copy of the card. It’s all controversial.
Today, I wanted to give my novice grader-level thoughts about the big 3 companies themselves, as well as some up-and-coming grading companies. Keep in mind that despite being in the hobby for nearly 17 years, I’ve only done 4 grading submissions in total, all over the past year. I do have cards queued for a variety of different companies, but I’m really just waiting on prices to change a bit more. In fact, by the time you’re watching this video, I highly recommend checking out the current prices and turnaround times for each company, before settling on a company to submit with.
