Could you imagine how much easier this would have been if you could roll? I'm so glad not being able to roll isn't a mechanic with this weapon in regular gameplay. Oh goodness would that ever suck. You know, I'm actually kind of sad that once you beat a proving ground you can't go back. Some of my weapons I've upgraded even more since and I'd like to see how I'd fair with them now, you know? Maybe be able to get better times on them. It's actually been really hard to find Machete upgrades iirc. Maybe there is a New Game + dealio in this game?
