490Addressing a public event in Mumbai, Maharashtra, PM Modi said, “The natural role of the media is to create discourse and promote discussions on serious topics. However, the direction of the media's discourse often depends on the direction of government policies. You are aware that governments have traditionally calculated every action based on vote-bank politics. We have changed this mindset. You might remember that decades ago, banks were nationalized in our country. But the reality was that until 2014, there were about 40-50 crore poor people in India who didn't even have a bank account. In other words, half the country was outside the banking system. Did this ever become an issue? We turned the Jan Dhan Yojana into a movement. We connected around 50 crore people to the banking system. This became our biggest tool in Digital India and anti-corruption efforts.”
