NaVi’s Seized (Denis Kostin) provides detailed tips on what it takes to be the in-game leader in CS:GO for Team NaVi. He talks about topics like overcoming a player’s fault denial, the difficulty of focusing on both the gameplay and leading, avoiding bad decisions based on emotions, overcoming temporary team member confidence issues, and why you should assembly your team based on their roles.

Partial transcript:
HyperX everyone! This is Denis Kostin and today I will talk about such thing as captainship. I'm a captain in Na`Vi for a couple of months already. I faced such problems as... at first you need to spend much more time in CS, because you need to build your team play, players movements and actions on plants, I mean you have to build the game the way you see it, so everything goes smoothly. After that you face difficulties like when some players dislike their roles, you need to prove your point very often. If players would always agree, it would've been much easier, but it's not the case usually. You have to make a million of points to convince someone to do something. The same goes for analysis after practice games, you start to explain some mistake and the guy replies that he was just unlucky, he had done everything correctly. So you also have to keep calm, don't be nervous, it's very difficult in those situations, but you have to explain calmly what was wrong and what he should've done.

When you have some plan, you start executing it and for example someone is pushing...You are killed, the situation is 4v5 after the exchange, you need to...I mean in the beginning of the round you must tell each player what to do. While you are telling them this, you can die easily in the beginning of the round from not looking on the crosshair but on the radar, because you must understand where the guys are standing and what we can do with it, what we can do after an exchange. The main problem is that it's hard to focus on your own game, when you have to lead everyone.

You have to always study your opponents during the tournaments, if you want to be a step ahead you must know what they do and what you can do to counter them. If your team being outperformed heavily, if you can't even win a single round, you start to worry not only about your gameplay, but about the team play and things you have to do to win as well, I mean there are a lot of nuances.

Support is always important for the captain, if you try to argue, especially with more than one guy, it's very exhausting and at some point if you won't feel any trust, you can run out of gas and drop everything, it's very hard. If you want to be a captain and create a team I can advise to gather players fitting to certain roles. You shouldn't pick 5 great fraggers who run around and kill, or five snipers and so on. You must select players carefully to fit certain roles, you must understand what kind of player you take and what's his strength, what he can contribute to the team.

After you gathered 5 players you should start with 2 maps, discuss pistol rounds, default, anti-eco and a couple of buy rounds. Then you practice those strategies for a couple of days, after each game you should discuss your mistakes, add or remove some elements if needed. Then you add the 3rd map, add new rounds for previous maps, and step by step you upgrade your rounds and gameplay. It would be easier if you can record replays, to watch them later, to judge not by words, for example someone says he was unlucky and didn't kill, but it turns out the situation was completely different. This way you can point out mistakes, it's easier and faster to figure out mistakes. It's really hard for one person to do it all, it's almost impossible without the help from teammates. If you don't have a coach, then everyone on the team should bring something to the table. Suggest strategies, pistol rounds, give a vision of the game on CT or T side. If other people have to come up with ideas, suggestions, and it'll make it easier for an IGL to handle it, because it's not a one-man job.

It's important for the IGL to have leadership qualities to be able to charge his team up, say the right words to motivate the team before an important game, inspire them and help them get a second wind. There's no way an IGL should clam up and give up before the game actually ends. He must keep believing until the very end, until the last round, the last frag, that his team is the best, that they will win, and do everything in order to win.
