9The Need for Speed (full title: Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed ) is the first game in the very popular Need for Speed series that includes up to 20 titles today - a bit depending on how you count. The game was first released in 1994 for 3DO , then for PC ( DOS ) in 1995 and for Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn in 1996.
The Need for Speed contains various sports cars and Japanese import cars. It was noted for its realism and audio and video commentary tracks. Electronic Arts collaborated with Road & Track to make the game as realistic as possible in terms of the cars' performance and sound effects. The Need for Speed is clearly the only serious attempt to get a realistic simulation of the cars' road holding and physics without an arcade feel.
You can play both closed circuit ("Circuit") and "A to B" races, so-called "Sprint" races in later titles. The Need for Speed contains police chases where the player can pay a fine or be arrested if he gets caught. The theme of police chases became very popular, and the so-called Hot Pursuit games in the series have usually sold better than those without police.
Exclusive features - at that time - were also that you can see detailed statistics after a race and also there is a replay function that you can save played races with, and then look at them again from several camera angles and with adjustable playback speed.
