This issue came about when LG introduced a firmware update back in July 2017, that greatly reduced the brightness of the HDR game mode on 2016 OLED TVs. LG’s intentions with this update seemed to be honorable - it was apparently an attempt to get the TVs to deliver more detail in the brightest parts of HDR game graphics. You could also improve the situation by calling in the TVs’ Dynamic Contrast feature (Set to high before).
However, while a few gamers embraced the change, it’s fair to say that it didn’t go down well at all with most 2016 LG OLED owners. Many of whom called on LG to either reverse the update or introduce an option to run the HDR Game mode more brightly and it is finally here!
LG managed to improve its HDR tone mapping algorithms so that it can deliver more baseline brightness without having to sacrifice as much peak luminance detail.
