WhatsApp introduces new privacy policy, will share your data with Facebook
07 January 2021
WhatsApp, the messaging platform owned by Facebook, has updated its Privacy Policy. All users received a notice, saying that the service will now be sharing user data with other Facebook companies.
This comes in stark contrast with what the company initially promised back in 2014 during the acquisition by Facebook when WhatsApp assured its goal is to know βas little as possibleβ.
While users were able to opt out until now, starting February 8, they will have only one solution, if they donβt want their data to be owned by the parent company - uninstall the app and stop using the service.

Users have until 08 February 2021 to read and agree to the new terms. Failure to do so would lead to WhatsApp deleting your account.Β Just to be clear, you can accept these terms again to revive your account.
The app collects a lot of metadata related to the account such as the phone number, your profile picture, your usage patterns (features you use, groups youβve joined, and status in the Story format), and device data.
While most of it is just restructured into different sections from older versions of the privacy policy, the company has added a section called βTransaction and Payments Dataβ in a push for Facebookβs various payment services to let you pay for different goods.Β And that brings us to the integration push.
Integration with Facebook companies
The updated policy says that WhatsApp may send you marketing material about Facebook companies. Plus, the firm will use your data collected from the app and other Facebook services for content suggestions, people recommendations, and ads along with service improvements.
Facebook has already integratedΒ Instagram and Messenger for cross-platform communication. And with this new change, it aims to provide βintegrations which enable you to connect your WhatsApp experiences with other Facebook Company Products.β

On Monday, WhatsAppΒ updatedΒ its terms of use and privacy policy, primarily to expand on its practices around how WhatsApp business users can store their communications. A pop-up has been notifying users that as of February 8, the app's privacy policy will change and they must accept the terms to keep using the app. As part of that privacy policy refresh, WhatsApp also removed a passage about opting out of sharing certain data with Facebook: "If you are an existing user, you can choose not to have your WhatsApp account information shared with Facebook to improve your Facebook ads and products experiences."
