2B and 9S go to investigate a missile site when some colossal mechs come down. A SHMUP boss fight follows and a lot of craziness ensues. I'm not sure if this is the case, but I think this is the part of the game that completely locks you out of completing certain side quests due to events of the main story. Regardless of the crashing, this part is easily the most memorable part of the game with one of the most jarring changes in scenery. So far into this game, I've found the 1 on 1 boss fights are the portion I enjoy the most along with exploring the side quests, unfortunately both of those are also the portions in which I'm mostly quiet.
