Sega is lauded, and quite rightly so, for the super scaler technology behind its coin-op hits, but it's clear that Taito was putting up some really stiff fight for the technical crown.
Night Striker is the most impressive of Taito's attempt at a 'super scaler' style game that I've played, a mash-up of OutRun and Space Harrier in which players control a futuristic combat vehicle with hover capabilities, blasting through the neon-lit environments of sci-fi cityscapes, blasting the forces of an evil terrorist organisation into scrap.
Like OutRun, the game is divided in a series of distinct stages, and players get to choose the next area, should they manage to defeat the stage boss, resulting in a total of six different routes through the game; the stages in each route aren't unique, and you will find some repetition if you decide to play through all of them. Should you manage to get to the final stage, the game ramps things up a notch by transforming your craft into something different (a giant Gundam-style suit, a fighter jet with triple shots etc.), and defeating the final boss earns you a different ending sequence, revealing an additional piece of the overall storyline. It's a cool feature, designed to encourage multiple playthroughs just to see what happens at the end of each route.
