Testing out a new script for AVIsynth, and VirtualDub. Trying to get a DS recording to look as good as possible. Plus, using the newest Xvid codec. I think the results turned out ok...but who knows, maybe one of you people out there in TV land knows something that I don't. What I'm attempting to do, is record only the top screen with the best quality possible for a 640x480 resolution (or close to that). Here's the script I used for this.

AviSource("Video File path")
Crop(0,0,-0,-192).BilinearResize(640, 480)

Any advice on some little tweaks I could make to improve the quality would help, but even without, I THINK this turned out ok.

You know, I love DeSmuME to death, but a couple things bug me about it.

#1: A distinct lack of a "Record from Now" function for recording movies, like every other emulator for every other console seems to have. Instead, every time you wish to record a movie, the game resets itself, and you're forced to "Record from Reset", as many other emulators refer to it. Maybe coding this function into the program is beyond them, or is too complicated, or maybe they're just too lazy. Who knows.

#2: Inability to have your AVI Output dimensions at any other size, than the extremely tiny default. Seriously, 90% of all emulators have the ability to do this, so why not DeSmuME? The only answer I've found, (stated multiple times in various offshoots on their forum), is what is written in their "FAQ", which states:

"We really don't want to put any smarts into the DeSmuME avi dumper, preferring to do it with avisynth instead. It is a slippery slope, as there are about 50 things that people want avi dumpers to do and theyre better off learning how to do it outside the emu with other tools. To that end, if you have any particular needs regarding this do not hesitate to post in our forum and maybe we'll help you make a new avisynth script. " (I like that 'MAYBE we'll help'...haha)

I don't know, but what this sounds like to me is that they're simply too lazy to implement them. Perhaps I'm wrong, as I do understand their point about people wanting different things, however, including a function(s) that are standard with 90% of other emulators doesn't seem like an extreme request.

#3: Being able to choose which screen to record. Both, Top, or Bottom. Not as important as the other two, as you can simply crop with video editing software. However, unless you like having to add a couple steps to the post production process, such as typing up a script in AVIsynth (which for most people relies on finding one already made on the internet, which can take quite a bit of time to wade through all the BS to find one, trust me), and being FORCED to use VirtualDub for the initial editing bit, (unless there's another decent program you can import an AVIsynth script with?), then you're forced to crop and expand from the original, TINY video, which craps all over the quality.

Bottom line, all these are legit requests and complaints. Other than that, I enjoy the program, and do appreciate the effort to produce it. With the exception of 99% of what Zeromus posts on the forum. Maybe I'm taking it the wrong way, but just about every post of his makes him come across as a massive egotistical dick, that has the attitude "no, we're not going to do anything to make the AVI/Movie recording process easier, as people need to learn to write scripts and solve it that way, and if you disagree or question this, then you're wrong". But once again, just my own personal take on it!

Also, here's a link to the FAQ that I mentioned:
