Play as Ellen Newland who is searching for her grandfather as she Cleans up the Earth, Grows a Garden, and Make Friends in No Place Like Home!

The game starts by explaining the premise in an animated cutscene, where Ellen Newland is about to depart Earth’s orbit for Mars, but wants to check on her grandfather one last time before doing so. This takes her on a journey where she reconnects with people from her past, cleans up the environment, rescues and rounds up scattered and lost animals, and strives to make each area she discovers better by crafting homes for the animals and renovating damaged buildings.

Using a vacuum backpack similar to the recently-released game Fresh Start (and the well-known Slime Rancher game), you suck up items to clean up the area – although it’s limited to trash or water in this game. Some of the piles of rubble require you to break them down, either with your drill (melee attacks) or with the fire from the drill weapon (like a torch, kind of). You also encounter spider robots that you must destroy, either by your drill melee attacks or the flame attack, although I found the melee attack to work much better.

Throughout Ellen’s adventure, she meets both animals and people that knew her grandfather and have tasks for her to complete, and as she does so, she unlocks resources needed for crafting certain recipes or relevant items (like chicken coops). Additionally, there are different types of fruits or vegetables you can find and plant that different types of animals will prefer to eat, and both the scope of each level as well as the unique and interesting tasks you’re directed to complete make this game both fun to play and one that you’ll come back to time and again.

The controls are easy to learn, the characters and world is colorful and animated with a beautiful artstyle, and the varied types of environments you find throughout Ellen’s adventure make this one you’ll enjoy from start to finish. Also, for the little gamers out there that aren’t ready for the challenge of having to search for recipe books or gathering a certain number of resources for each recipe, there is an easy mode where all of the recipes are free, cost nothing to craft, and the robots do no damage to Ellen.

No Place Like Home is $24.99 on consoles and $19.99 for PC via Steam, but is on sale right now for $12.49 on Nintendo, Playstation and Xbox, and on Steam it’s only $7.99 and is Steam Deck compatible – so if you’re looking to pick up a fun, enjoyable game for either yourself or the younger gamers in your family, this is worth picking up at full price and is a steal at sale prices.

Developed by Chicken Launcher and Published by Awaken Realms, No Place Like Home is a Casual Indie Adventure RPG that released March 17th, 2022 for PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series consoles and Playstation 5. For this review video, I played the Playstation 5 version.
