North Coast 500 Rhuroin - Shieldaig (Applecross Coast Road)
I'm not sure the people behind the North Coast 500 really thought the whole thing through.
Yes, it's great to encourage more tourists to the north of Scotland and I am certainly supportive of the concept. However, this stretch of road between Arrina and Shieldaig leaves a lot to be desired. Sure, it's stunningly beautiful, but is it up to handling all the extra traffic?
The Bealach na Ba mountain road further to the south might be more famous for it's hairpin bends but at least on most of the road you can see oncoming traffic a good distance off. This stretch has much more in the way of blind corners plus it's the main route for HGVs coming to and from Applecross.
That's my tuppence worth, I just hope with the onset of summer and the visiting tourist hordes that the NC500 continues to make the headlines for all the right reasons.
