Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to NOVA II: New Dawn, a community project megawad released in 2015, initially led by Michael ‘kildeth’ Kilderry, and seen to completion by Daryl Steffen, better known as dobu gabu maru. The NOVA series, created by kildeth, debuted in 2014 with the mission statement of showcasing the work of new or self-labeled ‘amateur’ mappers. I think of the NOVA series as a spiritual continuation of the Community Chest cycle with a little more oversight: the NOVA megawads are a lot less wild and wooly, but senior management never dampens the energy nor limits the creativity and spontaneity of the project’s participants. If you’ve played most of the big-name megawads out there and you’re looking for something a little off the beaten path, I recommend taking the NOVA series for a spin. I’ve elected to cover NOVA II first because I’ve played it most recently and it fits neatly in with the other sequels I’ve covered in Season 2. Anyway, let’s get to it.
